The year was 1989. The Police officer…Carla Vanlandingham. Came to may apartment per a noise complaint. I was alone. There was a throwdown party RIGHT NEXT DOOR. Carla was going by the address information provided by the complainee. When I explained to her where the noise was probably coming from, she accused me of having stolen a rubber tree plant in the corner of my livingroom. Was she high?

Paul Hammond writes, “No harm, no foul”. Well I suggest that if this is the preparation VCU provides for our future citizens and community leaders, then it falls far short of guaranteeing our hard fought for rights.

This is profiling — certainly well dressed executives are not being pulled over. And it was not apparently a result of “probable cause”. And certainly it seems to be discourteous and inappropriate behavior on the part of the police. To remain silent is only to acquiesce to this type of behavior, to reinforce this type of unseemly behavior.

VCU students should have the backbone to stand up to such.
