The Police

By Uncategorized No Comments

I went to see The Police in concert last night at John Paul Jones Arena at UVA in Charlottesville last night with Melissa. I have no other way to describe it than to say it should have been a pretty bad night because of how lost we got and something else that happened on the road (happened again- if you know me well you’ll enough know exactly what it is). Chances are I’ll tell you if I talk to you on a regular basis, but I’m just not gonna post it for the world to see. But it actually turned out to be an awesome night.

Anyway, the concert was amazing. Twenty years after releasing their last album, The Police sounded even better than ever. Sting is a great performer, but the whole band had a great stage presence. We were pretty high up, but I think we still had decent seats. That’s about the only non-blurry picture (to the left) I managed to snap on my iPhone.

They say half the fun of doing anything is how you get there, and I can attest to that. I haven’t had that much fun since probably this summer, and that was just in the car. We were singing our favorite mid-90s alternative rock songs at the top of our lungs all the way back. It was great. Maybe we were just hyped up on our coffee/hot chocolate, but I had the most awesome time, and all with someone who I’ve only so much as casually talked to in class before last night. We’ve got a lot in common. I think I’ve found a great friend.

Enjoying Life

By Uncategorized 12 Comments

This article comes from a blog I frequent called Dumb Little Man: Tips For Life. Despite the name, it’s actually a great resource. This article is all about taking the time to enjoy the little things in life, stuff we often take for granted because of our hectic schedules.

There are so many delicious, comforting, joyous moments in our life every day, but they are lost on us because we are often going too fast to savor them.Take a moment to answer the call of the good in your life by sensing it and fully enjoying these little gifts that are there if you slow down long enough to grab them. Here are a few to consider.

Quiet Morning Stillness: Ahh, the serenity of quiet early mornings. Instead of being upset about having to get up early, drink in the gift of early morning peace.

Long Hot Shower: Instead of the daily 5 minute shower, take a day or two off from showering. Unless you’re getting really dirty and sweaty everyday, we often never really get dirty enough to feel and appreciate the clean that comes from daily bathing. Next time you do shower, stand still with your head under the hot water. Notice the droplets all around you and how the light hits them. Maybe light some candles before you get in the shower. Take notice of the scents of your soaps and shampoos and immerse yourself in the luxury of it all.

Hot Morning Drink: In Japan, there are elaborate rituals for preparing, pouring, and drinking tea. What this does is elevate the tea drinking experience into something special. Why not establish your own ritual for your morning coffee or tea that involves enjoying the process of preparation, savoring the aroma, and slowly experiencing the first sips of your hot drink. Notice the warmth as it goes down the center of your body and spread out to heat you from the inside out. The slower you go, the more you notice, the greater the experience.

Alone Time: Are you troubled by waiting in line, waiting in your car in traffic, sitting in a waiting room? Turn that coin around to the other side. Recognize that what you have there is precious alone time to think and daydream. Don’t spend that time being annoyed. Use it and enjoy it!

Dessert: Who doesn’t enjoy dessert? Yet, when we eat our sweets we eat them fast and afterwards we feel guilty. We rob ourselves twice. First we lose out on the enjoyment of the experience by eating fast, and secondly by not embracing the reward. For some people in some countries where life is hard and the people are poor, a small sweet is a tremendous luxury. Next time you have a sweet, have a small bit, eat it slowly, and savor it. Imagine that it is the one luxury in your life. Allow yourself to fully enjoy it. And when you’re done, grin gleefully and be happy. Relish the memory and move forward having been justifiably rewarded.< Clean Teeth: Is brushing your teeth a chore? Or is it a luxury? Could it be a time to be thankful for your teeth? Could it be a time in which you are caring for your teeth, which is at the root of good health, and in reality caring for your whote self? Ah the feeling of clean teeth. Imagine life without being able to care for your teeth. Let that thought facilitate your appreciation of it.

What You Saw Today: What did you really see? Look for the beautiful, the miraculous, the wondrous, the spectacular. Look for it everywhere, especially in small places. What grand masterpiece is nature displaying for you today? See it. Drink it in. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to write a little poem and give it to someone you love or to someone you want to thank. Find some way to share that beauty. Remember, all it takes to capture that beauty is to pay attention.

Relief from the Elements: Close your eyes and imagine entering a warm home on a cold day after a walk in the brisk cold air. Can you feel it? Or how about during warmer months, when was the last time you truly appreciated the cool air of a fan cooling your face and body? Sometimes it is good to experience real heat or cold so we can grasp the luxury of a comfortable temperature.

Music: Have you ever listened to music without doing anything else? Probably not in a while. In my humble opinion, if there is a heaven, it must feel a lot like the joy of listening to music. Next time you listen to music try to melt into the sound. Try some classical or other music without words, and imagine what the message is. Does the message speak to you in words, pictures, feelings, or something else? And speaking of feelings, go with your feelings when you listen to the music. Let the music cleanse you completely!

Influence That Impacts

By Uncategorized 13 Comments

Yesterday was Friend Day at Richmond Community Church. Pastor Rick started a new series, “Influence That Impacts.” He had some interesting insights into how we are influenced by other people and how we influence them, as well. I took some notes during the sermon. Here are a few great points he made:

  1.  “We become aware of what others’ influence makes us feel like, not how we make other people we influence feel.” This is so true. We all talk about how others make us feel, but we don’t often think about how what we do makes others feel.
  2. “It’s not where people are in their lives, it’s what they think they aren’t that holds them back.” Many people are held back by fear, especially fear of failure. Moreover, a lot of people think they can’t positively influence someone else’s life because of what they think they’re lacking or because of a shortcoming. I’ve experienced this before. We all have our downfalls, but we can still have a good influence on other people.
  3. “Your influence is determined by the choices you make.” If you’re going to have a positive influence on someone’s life, you need to make smart choices and set a good example.
  4. “There are three types of people, generally speaking- Well Poisoners (those who discourage others from reaching their goals), Lawn Mowers (absorbed in themselves), and Life Enhancers (positively influence others).” This pretty much summarizes people’s personalities if you think about it. People are either going to bring you down or uplift you, or just not care at all and tend solely to their own self-advancement.

This is going to be a great message series, full of insights about how to reach, connect with, and influence others in your life.

Mac OS X Leopard

By Uncategorized 10 Comments

I just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5 – Leopard. There’s a ton of new features, mainly the user interface upgrades and other visual enhancements, but also more functional versions of standard applications like Mail and iCal, which I use to organize my whole life. There’s a pretty cool welcome video that plays after you install the operating system. Check it out:

Fall Festivities

By Uncategorized One Comment

So I pretty much ate my way through Halloween this year, even more than usual. There was a floor-wide party at work with five conference rooms decked out with every kind of Halloween decoration you could imagine, and more food than I could even comprehend. We’re not just talking candy. Each room looked like a mini Golden Corral. It was great.

Later on, I went over to the church to help out with Fall Fest. It turned out great. I went around filming everyone enjoying the carnival games and all the inflatables. Pastor Alan estimates there were 850+ people this year. Wow… great turnout!

Below are pictures from both events. I didn’t have my camera, so I just snapped some shots on my iPhone. They’re decent, but some are blurry.

Richmond Community Church

By Uncategorized 15 Comments

As you may have already read on Pastor Alan’s or Anthony Burns’ blogs, Glen Allen Community Church is now officially Richmond Community Church! Pastor Rick McDaniel announced it publicly this past Sunday. This is so exciting because of the way it positions us as a more regional church. With the vision of eventually opening five campuses, the name is much more suited for a multi-campus church. I am thrilled to be a part of the staff as we continue to grow, reach more and more people, and raise the bar on excellence.

The West End Campus will now be known as Richmond Community Church – Glen Allen, and the South Side Campus will now be known as Richmond Community Church – Midlothian. The new website is www.RCC-Impact.com. A new website is now being designed and is on target to launch in January, 2008.

Song Of The Week – Pat Monahan – “Her Eyes”

By Uncategorized 8 Comments

This is without a doubt my absolute favorite song right now. It’s the best I’ve heard in a long time. It’s the first single off Pat Monahan’s solo album. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name, he’s the lead singer from Train. Forgive the joke, but he’s “derailed” for a bit and plans to “climb back aboard” with the band after this solo album. Anyway, let me get “back on track.” The song’s called “Her Eyes.” Check it out!

Haul Out The Holly

By Uncategorized 7 Comments

I love Christmas. I’m about as Christmas crazy as anyone can get. Some refer to me as Clark Griswold from Christmas Vacation because of all the lights I string up on the house every year. I have a couple hundred Christmas songs I load onto my iPod every year. But despite how much I love the season, I just don’t think I can take it this early. Beginning this Thursday, XM Satellite Radio will launch its annual contemporary Christmas music channel, Holly, and will play 24/7 Christmas songs for two straight months on up until New Year’s Day. Christmas is coming earlier and earlier every year. At this rate, it’ll be Christmas all year long in a decade or two. Even I get burnt out on holiday music after two months. I have XM. I love XM. I love Christmas music. But I just don’t think I’ll be listening to channel 103 for a month or so until the day after Thanksgiving. Here’s an article from local media website VARTV about the holiday channel.

XM Satellite Radio will kick off the holiday music season on Thursday, November 1 with “Holly: An XM Holiday Channel” on XM channel 103. It’s mainstream holiday music. “Holly blends contemporary holiday music with just a touch of the classics for the perfect mix of Christmases present and memories from Christmases past,” states XM on its website. XM will be adding an additional five channels of holiday music come Monday, November 19 thru Christmas day. To make room for those new channels, XM is putting XM17 (US Country), XM29 (U-Pop), XM80 (The Move), XM90 (Fuego), and XM113 (XM Pops) on hiatus.

Dan In Real Life – Review

By Uncategorized 11 Comments

I went to see “Dan In Real Life” last night with Tori. I’ve never seen anything bad with Steve Carell in it, movies and television alike. This movie was no exception. I thought maybe it would be sort of a chick flick, but it actually had a great story line and had a lot to say about the way life is. Steve Carell showed a whole new side to his acting talent in this movie. In The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Evan Almighty, and NBC’s The Office, he’s in a more comedic role. That’s not to say that this movie wasn’t funny, but it had a more serious undertone than his other roles.

My overall rating:
